Synopsis

Nitram (2021) is an Australian drama you can watch online on iFILM, directed by Justin Kurzel and built around events from the mid-1990s that changed Australian gun law permanently. Caleb Landry Jones plays Nitram, a young man living with his parents in suburban Tasmania — irritating to neighbours, invisible to institutions, and utterly without anchor.

Judy Davis and Anthony LaPaglia are his parents, each exhausted in a different way. Essie Davis appears as an eccentric, wealthy woman who extends a kind of attention to Nitram that no one else bothers with. The film is not structured to explain or excuse him. Kurzel keeps the camera at a documentary distance and lets the accumulation of small failures — family, community, systems — do the work that a dramatic score would usually cover.

Landry Jones took the Best Actor prize at Cannes 2021 for a performance that refuses easy sympathy. This is a deliberately difficult film that functions more as a civic record than a thriller. Stream Nitram (2021) online on iFILM.
