Synopsis
True History of the Kelly Gang (2019) is an Australian crime western you can watch online on iFILM, directed by Justin Kurzel with George MacKay and Russell Crowe leading a strong cast that also includes Thomasin McKenzie and Nicholas Hoult. A co-production of Australia, France and the UK, running 124 minutes.
1860s colonial Australia. The English run things with a fist, and Irish settlers are ground under it. Ned Kelly grows up in crushing poverty — his mother sells herself to keep the children fed, his father dies in jail over a stolen cut of beef. As a teenager, Ned is handed off to bushranger Harry Power, a man who turns out to be his mother's transaction rather than a mentor. Violence becomes his grammar. The gang that eventually forms around him is less a criminal outfit than a symptom.
Kurzel strips the Kelly myth of its romantic armour and leaves something rawer: a study of how colonial brutality manufactures the outlaws it then hunts down. This is not a film for those who want the hero version of the story — it's uncomfortable, angry and deliberately unresolved. Stream True History of the Kelly Gang (2019) online on iFILM.
