Synopsis
"Sweet Country" (2018) is an Australian outback western directed by Warwick Thornton, available to watch online on iFILM. Northern Territory, 1929: Aboriginal stockman Sam (Hamilton Morris) kills a white station owner who attacks him — a clear act of self-defence. But in this territory, whose word counts is decided long before any trial begins.
Sam flees into the scorching landscape with his pregnant wife, a posse closing behind them. Bryan Brown leads the pursuit; Sam Neill plays a cattleman whose certainty begins to waver the longer the chase goes on. When Sam surrenders to protect his wife, the film shifts to a courtroom — and the question it really wants to ask: can a justice system deliver a fair verdict when it wasn't designed with everyone in mind?
Thornton shoots the Australian landscape as though it has its own conscience — the red earth, the blinding light, the silences that say more than the dialogue. The film earned strong recognition on the international festival circuit and stands as one of the sharpest cinematic reckonings with Australia's colonial history.
