A teenage girl's body turns up, and the inquiry pulls Tennison into a neighbourhood that has every reason to distrust the police and no interest in talking to her. The case carries a private complication too: DS Bob Oswalde, the man she recently had an affair with, gets assigned to her team. So she works the murder, manages a former lover across the incident room, and tries to tell a genuine confession from a convenient one. Race sits at the centre of it, turning every interview into something political.

Together they are able to discover who the real murderer is.
