This time she's moved to a Vice unit and handed the job of cleaning up Soho. The work starts grubby rather than violent — rent boys, pornography, blackmail in the back rooms of the district. Then a child's body changes everything. Tennison follows the thread and hits the thing every detective dreads: the trail runs back inside the force itself. A local photographer is caught destroying evidence, his studio gives up video no one wanted to see, and the case stops being ordinary crime. The closer she gets, the more people would rather she stopped.
