The Man in the White Suit
Guinness is Back...Working Wonders With Wile, Whimsey and Wit!
Synopsis
The Man in the White Suit (1951) is a British satirical comedy you can watch online on iFILM, directed by Alexander Mackendrick at Ealing Studios, with Alec Guinness as the oblivious genius at the centre of a very capitalist catastrophe. Inventor Sidney Stratton develops a fabric that never gets dirty and never wears out. He thinks he has done humanity a favour.
He has not. The moment word gets out, mill owners and trade unions — usually bitter enemies — form a united front to bury him. If the suit lasts forever, the whole textile industry collapses. Joan Greenwood and Cecil Parker are perfect as figures who can barely contain their outrage behind polite smiles. Guinness plays Stratton as a man so consumed by the formula that he genuinely cannot grasp why everyone wants him stopped.
It runs 85 minutes and wastes none of them. Ealing was at its best when it made comedy feel like a scalpel, and this is one of the sharpest cuts. Stream The Man in the White Suit (1951) online on iFILM.
