Synopsis
Diary of a Country Priest (Journal d'un curé de campagne, 1951) is a French drama directed by Robert Bresson — watch it online on iFILM. A frail young priest arrives in the village of Ambricourt to take up his first parish posting and quickly discovers that rural calm is nothing of the sort.
Claude Laydu plays the unnamed curé who keeps a private journal of his spiritual struggles and social failures. The local gentry ignore him, schoolgirls mock him during catechism, and his attempt to intervene in a troubled marriage blows up into a small-town scandal. Only an older priest from a neighbouring village shows him any warmth. All the while, an undiagnosed illness is quietly taking its toll.
Bresson adapted Georges Bernanos' novel and built the film around the priest's handwritten entries — narrated in his own voice — so the audience inhabits his doubt rather than observing it from outside. The result is one of the most studied works in the history of cinema: it claimed the Golden Lion at Venice in 1951 and has shaped filmmakers from Paul Schrader to Michael Haneke.
