Synopsis
The Lavender Hill Mob (1951) is a classic British crime comedy you can watch online on iFILM, starring Alec Guinness and directed by Charles Crichton. Henry Holland has spent twenty uneventful years moving gold bullion for a London bank. Soft-spoken, punctual, completely overlooked — and quietly plotting the perfect heist.
His opening arrives when he teams up with a neighbour who makes cheap metal souvenirs for a living. Their scheme: melt the stolen gold into miniature Eiffel Tower figurines and walk them straight through customs. It shouldn't work. It almost does. Crichton keeps the caper moving at a clip — 78 minutes with no wasted beats, anchored by Guinness doing what Guinness did best: making the mildest man in the room the most dangerous one.
T.E.B. Clarke's screenplay picked up a BAFTA and an Oscar nomination for Original Screenplay. Watch for a blink-and-miss appearance from a very young Audrey Hepburn, one year before Roman Holiday made her a star. Stream The Lavender Hill Mob online on iFILM.
