Synopsis
The Truth (La Vérité, 1960) is a French courtroom drama and romance you can watch online on iFILM, directed by Henri-Georges Clouzot and built around a career-redefining performance by Brigitte Bardot. Dominique Marceau is on trial for murder. The gallery is packed. Everyone has already decided what she is.
The film unfolds through witness testimony, each account reshaping who Dominique was: reckless, in love, wronged, dangerous. Clouzot uses the trial structure to ask something harder — whether any testimony can capture a person truly. Bardot plays her not as an icon but as a woman cornered by other people's versions of her, and the performance is raw in a way her earlier work rarely was. Sami Frey plays the lover at the centre of it all, with Charles Vanel and Paul Meurisse as the duelling lawyers who frame every scene. A young Jacques Perrin appears in an early role.
Released at the height of the cultural debate surrounding Bardot herself, the film turned it into its subject. Stream The Truth (1960) online on iFILM.
