Synopsis

The Zachary family holds its corner of the frontier the way frontier families do — through hard work and close ranks. Rachel is the daughter they raised as their own. Then a drifter passes through and drops a rumor: she's not theirs by blood. She's Kiowa. Word travels fast in sparse country. Neighbors who shared meals and fence lines now keep their distance. And when the Kiowa themselves arrive to reclaim her, the family has to decide who they're protecting and why.
Huston turned a genre piece into something more uncomfortable — a film about how quickly a community turns on people it claims to love once identity becomes a threat. Hepburn plays Rachel with a coiled restraint that sits far from her more glamorous roles, and Lancaster brings a protective fury that's never quite clean or simple.
