Synopsis
Agnes of God (1985) is Norman Jewison's chilling psychological drama, and you can watch it online on iFILM. A newborn is found dead in a convent, and the only suspect is Agnes, a young nun who swears she remembers nothing: no pregnancy, no birth, no child.
Court-appointed psychiatrist Martha Livingston (Jane Fonda) arrives to judge whether the girl is fit to stand trial. Standing in her way is the Mother Superior (Anne Bancroft), who shields her novice from a world she calls corrupting. Meg Tilly plays Agnes as something between a saint and a wounded child, and neither doctor nor audience can quite tell which.
Adapted from John Pielmeier's Broadway play, the film stages faith against reason: miracle or murder, grace or breakdown. It plays almost like chamber theater, carried by three actresses, with Bancroft and Tilly both landing Oscar nominations. Cold, unsettling, and built for viewers who prefer hard questions to tidy answers. Stream Agnes of God (1985) online on iFILM.
