Synopsis
Hilary and Jackie (1998) is a British drama you can watch online on iFILM. Two sisters are inseparable as children, but music hands world fame to only one of them — cellist Jacqueline du Pré.
Jackie tours the globe with her cello and basks in roaring concert halls, while Hilary settles into a quiet life with a husband and kids in the countryside. Each is certain the other got the better deal. When the audiences cool and her body begins to fail, Jackie comes home and asks her sister for something no one says aloud. The film replays the same years twice, once through each woman, and that double vision turns a small family story uncomfortably honest. Emily Watson is Jackie; Rachel Griffiths is Hilary.
Anand Tucker directed it from the memoir by Hilary and Piers du Pré, and both leads picked up Oscar nominations for the work. What ultimately breaks Jackie at her peak unfolds slowly here, so we'll leave it unspoiled. It's for viewers after an intimate drama about talent, envy and the cost of genius, with no gloss on top.
