Merlin (Season 1)
The most magical adventure of all time.
Synopsis
Merlin (1998) is a fantasy TV miniseries you can watch online on iFILM. Directed by Steve Barron, it retells the Arthurian legend from the sorcerer's own vantage point, with Sam Neill in the title role. The supporting cast alone makes it worth seeking out: Isabella Rossellini, Helena Bonham Carter, Miranda Richardson, Rutger Hauer, John Gielgud, and James Earl Jones all appear — an unusual gathering for a late-nineties fantasy production.
The story begins before Camelot exists. The Queen of the Old Ways, Mab, shapes Merlin from birth to be her weapon — a champion who will drive out the new faith and restore magic to Britain. Merlin refuses the role. Instead he works toward Arthur, toward a Round Table, toward something that outlasts any one ruler. Mab has other plans, and the conflict between them runs the length of the series.
What carries it is the framing: this is less a story about knights and quests than about a man who keeps being handed power and keeps handing it back. In an era of sprawling fantasy franchises, the restraint is almost striking. Stream Merlin (1998) online on iFILM.
