Synopsis
The 13 Roses (Las 13 rosas, 2007) is a Spanish historical drama you can watch online on iFILM. Madrid has just fallen to Franco's forces, and thirteen very young women are rounded up on invented charges of plotting against the new regime.
Director Emilio Martínez Lázaro reconstructs what happened in the summer of 1939: seamstresses, students and union members, most of them not yet twenty. They are questioned without evidence, held in the overcrowded Ventas women's prison, and sentenced to the firing squad. The cast includes Pilar López de Ayala, Verónica Sánchez, Nadia de Santiago, Marta Etura and Bárbara Lennie. The camera stays on their faces rather than on slogans — the fear, the letters to their mothers, the final night in the cell.
There are no grand speeches about guilt or innocence here. The film simply shows a state erasing the people it has decided are its enemies. It is a hard watch that lodges in your memory longer than any textbook, and it suits anyone drawn to true stories from twentieth-century Europe who can sit with an ending that offers no comfort.
