Synopsis
The Devil's Bath (Des Teufels Bad, 2024) is a bleak historical drama edged with horror, available to stream online on iFILM. In mid-1700s rural Austria, a devout peasant named Agnes marries the man she loves and moves into his village — only for that joy to drown in an endless ledger of chores and other people's expectations.
Her husband is cold, her mother-in-law exacting, and Agnes feels something eat at her from inside that her century has no name for yet. The Church teaches that taking your own life slams the gate to heaven shut, and that belief corners her in a horrifying way. Anja Plaschg — known as the musician Soap&Skin — carries the slow descent almost wordlessly, on her face alone, and composed the score herself. Directors Severin Fiala and Veronika Franz, the pair behind Goodnight Mommy, shoot damp forests and dark cottages until the chill turns physical.
The script draws on genuine court records: desperate women of the era would kill so they could confess and be executed in a state of grace rather than damn themselves by suicide.
