Synopsis
The Lovers on the Bridge (Les Amants du Pont-Neuf, 1991) is Leos Carax's sprawling French romance — watch online on iFILM for one of the most visually ambitious love stories European cinema produced in that decade. Alex is a street performer with a drinking problem and a habit of sleeping on the Pont-Neuf, Paris's oldest bridge, while it sits closed for repairs. Michele is a painter, slowly going blind, who has walked away from her old life entirely.
Juliette Binoche and Denis Lavant play two people with nowhere else to go, circling each other across the closed bridge against a backdrop of fireworks over the Seine and the particular loneliness of living outside normal society. Alex finds a missing-persons notice for Michele in a newspaper — and hides it. That single act quietly detonates everything that follows.
Production stretched across several years and nearly bankrupted its backers; Carax ended up building a full-scale replica of the bridge near Montpellier to complete the shoot. The result is a film that treats obsession and tenderness as two expressions of the same impulse. Stream The Lovers on the Bridge (1991) on iFILM.
