Synopsis
Masculin Féminin (1966) is a Jean-Luc Godard drama you can watch online on iFILM, starring Jean-Pierre Léaud and Chantal Goya. Paris, mid-1960s: Paul has just finished his military service, writes leftist pamphlets, and keeps bumping into Madeleine — an aspiring pop singer who mostly wants to sell records and not think too hard about politics.
Godard built the film as fifteen separate vignettes rather than a conventional narrative. Street interviews, arguments at the cinema, long silences over café tables. Paul believes he is living through the collision of Marx and Coca-Cola. Madeleine is focused on the charts. They share a bed but not a worldview, and Godard is more interested in that gap than in any reconciliation.
Made two years before the May 1968 uprising, the film feels like a document of a generation that sensed the earthquake coming without knowing its shape yet. For anyone tracking the French New Wave — or just looking at Léaud across his career — this is a necessary piece of that picture. Stream Masculin Féminin (1966) online on iFILM.
