Synopsis

L.I.E. (2001) is Michael Cuesta's unsettling indie crime drama, available to watch online on iFILM. The title stands for the Long Island Expressway, the highway running past the home of fifteen-year-old Howie. His mother recently died on that road, his father is wrapped up in a girlfriend and shady contracts, and the boy is left to drift on his own.

This is Paul Dano's first leading role, and his quiet, watchful presence anchors the whole film. To fill the emptiness, Howie and his friend Gary burglarize wealthy neighbors — until they break into the wrong house. Its owner, an ex-Marine known as Big John (a fearless turn from Brian Cox), turns out to be far more dangerous and complicated than he seems, and an uneasy bond forms between man and boy.

Cuesta refuses both sensation and easy moralizing, holding the viewer in a gray zone where predator, victim and loneliness blur together. A Sundance breakout, it became a touchstone of early-2000s American independent cinema. Not a comfortable watch, but essential for anyone who values honest, difficult filmmaking. Stream L.I.E. (2001) online on iFILM.
