Synopsis
The Castle (Das Schloß, 1997) is Michael Haneke's adaptation of Franz Kafka's unfinished novel, available to watch online on iFILM. Ulrich Mühe plays K., a land surveyor who arrives at a remote village believing the Castle on the hill summoned him for official work. Nobody in the village can confirm this.
Every attempt to reach the Castle's officials produces another referral, another waiting room, another phone call that ends without resolution. Susanne Lothar and André Eisermann play villagers who stopped questioning the order they live inside long before K. showed up.
Haneke strips away the dark comedy present in Kafka's prose and leaves only the dread — polite, ordinary, the impossibility of being officially acknowledged. This Austrian-German-French co-production is among the most clinical screen readings of the source material, and the closest to what Kafka left deliberately open. Stream The Castle (1997) on iFILM.
