Synopsis
Three Outlaw Samurai (Sanbiki no samurai, 1964) is a Japanese chanbara action film you can watch online on iFILM. It marks the directorial debut of Hideo Gosha. A wandering ronin named Shiba stumbles onto a remote mill where three peasants are holding the local magistrate's daughter hostage.
Their demand is modest: they just want the lord to read a petition against his crushing taxes. Shiba keeps to the sidelines at first. But the dirtier the magistrate plays, the harder it gets to stay neutral, and the ronin finally draws his sword for the doomed farmers. Two defectors from the lord's own guard, Sakura and Kikyo, throw in with him. Three men against an entire clan. Tetsuro Tamba plays Shiba.
Gosha adapted his own TV serial for the big screen and announced himself as a master of hard-edged chanbara — mud, rain, steel and not a shred of romance about noble warriors. The fights run short and brutal, and honor costs a man everything he has. It lands for fans of Kurosawa and Zatoichi who want their samurai cinema raw and mean rather than polished.
