Mothra vs. Godzilla
A massive Mach 3 moth! The heavy missile tank Godzilla! The sky, sea, and land quake in the fierce battle of the century!
Synopsis
Mothra vs. Godzilla (モスラ対ゴジラ, 1964) is a Toho kaiju classic directed by Ishiro Honda — watch it online on iFILM. A typhoon washes an enormous egg onto the Japanese coast, and a corporation moves fast to turn it into a paying attraction. The egg belongs to Mothra, the guardian creature of Infant Island, and her two miniature fairy priestesses cross the ocean to ask for it back. They're turned down.
When Godzilla surfaces near Nagoya and starts tearing through the country, the same people who refused Mothra's request have nowhere left to turn. Honda frames the whole setup as a clean moral equation: the island's people have every reason to let Japan burn, and the film lets that tension sit before resolving it. Reporter Ichiro Sakai and photographer Junko are the human thread running through the chaos, pushed along by events rather than driving them — which is exactly the right call in a monster film.
The effects hold up better than you'd expect for 1964, and the larva sequence in the finale remains one of the more inventive moments in the entire Showa-era Godzilla run. Stream Mothra vs. Godzilla (1964) on iFILM.
