Rebecca (Julianne Moore) is a stage actress riding a career high while her husband Tom (David Duchovny), a stay-at-home dad, quietly unravels into boredom and temptation. Her slacker brother Tobey (Billy Crudup) has spent years dodging any real commitment to his patient girlfriend Elaine (Maggie Gyllenhaal). Both relationships fall apart at once — the women go looking for something new, the men suddenly grasp how much losing them hurts and launch into clumsy, last-ditch grand gestures.
