Synopsis
Spiritual Kung Fu (1978) is a Hong Kong martial-arts romp with a young Jackie Chan that you can watch online on iFILM. When a sacred manual, the Seven-Fist Kung Fu, is stolen from a Shaolin temple, it falls to the temple's biggest goof-off to set things right.
Chan plays a cheeky trainee who skips practice and takes a beating from his elders. Then, one night in the temple library, five green ghosts with flaming red hair appear and decide to teach him a lesson. They drill five animal styles into him — Dragon, Snake, Crane, Tiger and Leopard — skills he will need against a warrior bent on bringing every clan under his heel. Lo Wei, who directed several of Chan's early features, is behind the camera.
This is Jackie before the worldwide fame: skinny, still years from his million-dollar stunts, yet already armed with the slapstick and acrobatics that made his name. The fights keep stopping for goofy business with the ghosts, and that is the whole charm — the film never pretends to be serious. It is one for old-school Hong Kong fight fans and anyone filling in Chan's early years. Stream Spiritual Kung Fu (1978) online on iFILM.
