Synopsis
The live-action Kiki's Delivery Service (2014) is a Japanese fantasy adventure you can watch online on iFILM. Director Takashi Shimizu — known outside Japan mainly for the J-horror franchise Ju-On — took Hayao Miyazaki's beloved 1989 anime and rebuilt it with real actors, casting Fuka Koshiba as Kiki.
The setup stays true to the source: a young witch-in-training leaves home to spend a mandatory year alone in an unfamiliar seaside town. She sets up a small delivery service, flying packages by broomstick and navigating a world that doesn't quite know what to make of her. Her talking cat Jiji provides commentary of decreasing enthusiasm. The result is lighter than anything else Shimizu has made — which turns out to be exactly the point.
