Synopsis
America America (1963) is Elia Kazan's historical drama, and you can watch it online on iFILM. In the late 19th century, under Ottoman rule in Anatolia, a young Greek named Stavros holds onto a single idea: reach New York, where a different kind of life supposedly begins.
His family hands him their savings and sends him to Constantinople to set up a business and bring everyone over. The money is gone before he arrives. What follows is one man's struggle to the golden shore, told without sentiment — Stavros begs, lies, shines shoes, sells whatever he owns, and loses it again, all to buy a place on a westbound ship. Newcomer Stathis Giallelis carries the whole film, letting that hunger slowly hollow the boy out.
Kazan based the story on his own uncle, who made the same crossing, turning a family legend into a clear-eyed look at the immigrant dream and its costs. It runs nearly three hours, took home the Academy Award for its black-and-white art direction, and landed three more Oscar nods, Best Picture among them. Slow, demanding, and deeply personal cinema.
