Synopsis
Bay of Angels (La Baie des Anges, 1963) is a French drama directed by Jacques Demy, available to watch online on iFILM. Shot in black and white on the Côte d'Azur, the 84-minute film stars Jeanne Moreau and arrived a year before Demy made The Umbrellas of Cherbourg — a quieter, sharper work and one of cinema's most unsentimental studies of compulsive gambling.
Jean, a bank clerk, stumbles into a casino on a whim and wins big. The experience cracks open something in him, and soon he's heading to Nice with money in his pocket and no clear plan. At the roulette tables he meets Jackie — ivory dress, white hair, the look of someone who stopped weighing consequences a long time ago. Her marriage is gone. Her son is nearly gone. The wheel is what remains.
Moreau plays Jackie without a single plea for sympathy, which is what makes the character so unsettling. Jean wants to pull her back; instead, the film watches him start to go under alongside her. Demy isn't interested in a lesson — he's after the logic of obsession, the way it feels like love from the inside. Anyone expecting light French romance will find something far colder and more alive.
