Synopsis
Gentleman's Agreement (1947) is an American drama you can watch online on iFILM, directed by Elia Kazan and starring Gregory Peck. Journalist Phil Green is assigned to write a series of pieces on antisemitism in postwar America. His method: tell everyone he is Jewish and record what happens.
What he encounters is not the overt hostility he anticipated. The apartment he is told is unavailable. The offhand remarks at dinner parties. The unwritten rules at hotels and private clubs that no one bothers to write down because no one needs to. Dorothy McGuire, John Garfield, and Celeste Holm build an ensemble that Kazan keeps close to the bone — no melodrama, just the steady accumulation of small exclusions.
At the 1948 Academy Awards, the film claimed Best Picture, Kazan took the directing prize, and Holm was honoured for her supporting role. For Hollywood of that era, making this film at all was a choice that came with consequences. Stream Gentleman's Agreement online on iFILM.
