Synopsis
The Throne (사도, 2015) is a Korean historical drama from director Lee Joon-ik, available to watch online on iFILM. It dramatizes a real tragedy of the Joseon court, where an aging king condemns his only heir to death by his own decree.
King Yeongjo (Song Kang-ho) reached the throne amid whispers about his right to it, so he demands flawlessness from his son Sado (Yoo Ah-in) — in calligraphy, in ritual, in everything. The prince buckles, his outbursts grow darker, and at last his father has him sealed inside a narrow wooden rice chest with no food or water. The film unfolds those days of confinement through flashbacks, tracing how a father's love curdled into a sentence.
Lee Joon-ik skips the palace-intrigue spectacle for an intimate story of father and son, with politics kept to the background. Yoo Ah-in's performance swept Korea's top acting prizes, and Song Kang-ho plays the king without a single false note. It's for anyone who likes slow period dramas that land on real emotional weight.
