Synopsis
Masquerade (2012) is a South Korean period drama you can watch online on iFILM. Eight years into his reign, King Gwanghae senses a plot brewing at court and fears poison in his cup. To protect himself, he orders a chief advisor to find a body double.
The job falls to Ha-seon, a street clown who makes his living with crude impersonations for the nobility. At first it's only a trick to cover a few dangerous days. Then the real king collapses, drugged into a stupor, and the commoner has to hold the throne for real — running the council, signing decrees, meeting the eyes of ministers who must never guess. Lee Byung-hun plays both men, and the rough-edged jester, with his unexpected streak of fairness, slowly governs wiser than the sovereign he stands in for.
Director Choo Chang-min builds the film on a deceptively simple question: what happens when power lands in the hands of someone who has a conscience rather than a birthright. The picture became one of Korea's biggest box office hits and swept the country's top film honors at the Grand Bell Awards. Its premise springs from fifteen days missing from the official chronicles of Gwanghae's rule — the gap where the invention lives. Stream Masquerade online on iFILM.
