Masquerade

Then the real king collapses, drugged into a stupor, and the commoner has to hold the throne for real — running the council, signing decrees, meeting the eyes of ministers who must never guess. Lee Byung-hun plays both men, and the rough-edged jester, with his unexpected streak of fairness, slowly governs wiser than the sovereign he stands in for.

Director Choo Chang-min builds the film on a deceptively simple question: what happens when power lands in the hands of someone who has a conscience rather than a birthright. The picture became one of Korea's biggest box office hits and swept the country's top film honors at the Grand Bell Awards.
