Synopsis
The King and the Clown (2005) is a Korean period drama you can watch online on iFILM. Under the Joseon dynasty, two travelling street performers are arrested for a public skit that mocks the king himself.
The penalty is death — unless they can make the king laugh. Dragged into the palace, the brash Jang-sang and his delicate, strikingly beautiful partner Gong-gil (Lee Jun-ki) pass the test and become royal favorites. But the king grows obsessed with Gong-gil, the court turns into a nest of jealousy, and the queen starts plotting to be rid of the young actor. A clown's game curdles into deadly intrigue.
Directed by Lee Joon-ik, the film became one of the biggest box-office hits in Korean history and turned Lee Jun-ki into a star overnight. Its power comes from the gap between palace gold and gutter slapstick, and from a love the era forbids naming. For anyone who likes lavish costume tragedy.
