Synopsis
My First Client (2019) is a Korean courtroom drama you can watch online on iFILM. Jung-yeop is a young, ambitious lawyer chasing a spot at a prestigious firm when he lands the kind of case everyone warns him to walk away from: a ten-year-old girl has confessed to killing her little brother.
The more he digs, the less the confession holds together. The seven-year-old is dead, his sister Da-bin calmly takes the blame, and the children's mother answers every question a little too smoothly. Jung-yeop slowly realizes the girl is covering for something far worse than the crime she's claiming. Director Jang Kyu-sung based the film on a real domestic-abuse case that shook South Korea, and he keeps the camera on the quiet failures of every adult who noticed and said nothing. Lee Dong-hwi grounds the lawyer in doubt rather than heroics, while young Choi Myung-bin is devastating as the girl. This is a hard watch, not a comfortable one, and that's the point.
