Synopsis
Elisa & Marcela (2019) is a black-and-white historical drama directed by Isabel Coixet — watch online on iFILM. Starring Natalia de Molina and Greta Fernández, the film is built on actual documents and court records from early 20th-century Spain.
Elisa and Marcela met at a teaching college and fell in love. The law had no room for them. Elisa's solution was radical: she assumed a male identity and in 1901 married Marcela in a church ceremony, making them the first documented same-sex couple to legally wed in Spain. What followed was flight across borders, arrest, and relentless pursuit by authorities and the press.
Coixet shoots the story in monochrome, which is the right call — the desaturated palette keeps sentimentality at arm's length and lets the facts do the work. This is less a love story than a record of two women refusing to disappear. Stream Elisa & Marcela (2019) online on iFILM.
