Angels of Death (Season 1)

Angels of Death (殺戮の天使, 2018) is a Japanese anime series you can watch online on iFILM. Rachel Gardner wakes up in a strange underground building with no memory of how she got there. On one of the floors she runs into Zack — a large, scythe-wielding serial killer wrapped in bandages. Most people would run. Rachel does not.

What unfolds is a floor-by-floor survival puzzle: each level of the building is the domain of a different killer, each with their own rules and their own reasons. Rachel and Zack strike an unusual deal — he'll kill her once they escape together. Until then, they move as a team. Voice actors Haruka Chigusa and Nobuhiko Okamoto give the pair an oddly compelling dynamic that carries the show well past its premise.

The series adapts Makoto Sanada's indie RPG of the same name; the anime aired in 2018, produced by J.C. Staff. It's a slow-burn horror that prioritizes atmosphere and character over straightforward action — the kind of show where the weirdest thing isn't the killer, it's the girl who isn't afraid of him.
