A Daughter

Pietro becomes a widower and puts everything into raising her. He doesn't allow himself to stop long enough to grieve — she needs him, so he's there. They heal around each other quietly, across years. When Pietro eventually tries to move on and brings a new partner into his life, his daughter's reaction goes far beyond what he expected. De Matteo, who mapped the quiet cruelties of family life in Gli equilibristi, returns to the same territory: the film is less interested in who's wrong than in how much damage love can do when it has nowhere left to go.
