Synopsis
The Great Waldo Pepper (1975) is a George Roy Hill adventure drama you can watch online on iFILM. Robert Redford plays a hotshot pilot who came of age just a beat too late for the dogfights he dreamed of, and now drifts across 1920s rural America selling thrills by the wingful.
Waldo barnstorms county fairs, looping his biplane and walking the wing for crowds who paid a dollar to gasp. He has a rival turned friend in Axel, a nerveless parachutist played by Susan Sarandon, and one obsession he can't shake: Ernst Kessler, the German ace whose war record made him a legend. When Hollywood starts hiring stunt flyers for a war picture, the duel Waldo never got finally drifts within reach.
Hill, who directed Redford in The Sting and Butch Cassidy, shot the flying for real instead of leaning on trickery, and the danger reads on screen. The film aches for a vanishing world of fabric wings and men who feel caged on solid ground. Quiet and underseen, it's one for viewers who love planes and old movies with no CGI in sight.
