Brogar wins gold and defects to the West two months before the Berlin Wall comes down. The secret police kill his father and best friend as punishment. He rebuilds his life in Los Angeles, training quietly for another shot at the Games. His former coach Mueller — an ideologue who takes the defection as personal treason — follows him to America, and the competition turns into a manhunt.
