Synopsis
The Thorn Birds (1983) is the landmark miniseries from Colleen McCullough's novel, and you can watch online on iFILM. On the Australian sheep station of Drogheda, the Cleary family's story unfolds across half a century.
At its heart are Meggie Cleary and Father Ralph de Bricassart. She loves him from girlhood; he loves her back yet keeps choosing the priesthood and a climb toward Rome. Rachel Ward and Richard Chamberlain play a longing that stretches over decades and can neither be fulfilled nor let go. Around them stand Barbara Stanwyck as the imperious Mary Carson, plus Christopher Plummer, Jean Simmons and Bryan Brown. Drought, fire, war and grief keep tearing them apart.
The title comes from a Celtic legend — a bird that sings once in its life, impaling itself on a thorn. The 1983 ABC broadcast pulled most of America to its screens and took home a fistful of Golden Globes. This is melodrama with no apology, for anyone who likes a heart broken slowly and beautifully.
