Synopsis
The Voyage of Captain Fracassa (Il viaggio di Capitan Fracassa, 1990) is an Italian-French adventure comedy you can watch online on iFILM. Director Ettore Scola adapts Théophile Gautier's 1863 novel, following the penniless Baron de Sigognac who joins a company of traveling players crossing 17th-century France rather than rot alone in his crumbling estate.
Massimo Troisi plays the baron with a mixture of quiet melancholy and unexpected wit; Emmanuelle Béart is the young actress Isabelle he falls for on the road, and Ornella Muti brings her own gravity as the older Serafina. A duel, a taste for the stage, and a role as the swaggering Captain Fracassa all follow in turn. Scola keeps the tone airy without tipping into farce — a film that clearly enjoys the theater without pretending it's anything grander than a good picaresque.
