Synopsis
Mississippi Masala (1991) is a romantic drama from director Mira Nair that you can watch online on iFILM. It opens with exile: when the dictator Idi Amin expels Uganda's Indian community, one family is uprooted and, years later, ends up running a modest motel deep in Mississippi.
Their grown daughter Mina meets Demetrius, a Black carpet cleaner with dreams of building his own business. The attraction comes fast — and so does the wall around it. Mina's tradition-bound Indian relatives won't accept him, while Demetrius's own community eyes the outsider with suspicion. The film looks squarely at the friction between two minorities, each one well acquainted with prejudice of its own. Sarita Choudhury plays Mina and Denzel Washington plays Demetrius.
Nair made something rare for the early '90s: a love story that crosses racial lines without flinching, warm and sensual, scented with spice and steeped in Southern blues. It isn't a lecture on tolerance but a lived-in portrait of two families trapped by their own fears. One for viewers who like a thoughtful romance carried by a strong central pairing.
