Synopsis
The Namesake (2006) is a drama you can watch online on iFILM, directed by Mira Nair and adapted from Jhumpa Lahiri's novel of the same name. Irrfan Khan and Tabu play Ashoke and Ashima Ganguli, a Bengali couple who trade Calcutta for New York. He adapts quietly. She grieves quietly. Together they build a life that looks like belonging from the outside.
Their American-born son Gogol — named after a Russian writer, a story that matters more than it first seems — grows up embarrassed by exactly the things that made his parents who they are. Kal Penn plays him across two decades: not a rebel, not a bad son, just someone who keeps reaching for an identity that keeps sliding away. The film doesn't punish him for it, which is what makes watching it uncomfortable in the right way.
Nair shot in both Calcutta and New York and keeps both cities physically present in the frame — the film smells like both places. It covers roughly thirty years without rushing, and the quiet grief that runs through it lands hardest in the final act. Stream The Namesake (2006) online on iFILM.
