Synopsis
Starve Acre (2024) is Daniel Kokotajlo's British folk horror, and you can watch it online on iFILM. Set in early-1970s Yorkshire, it drops a grieving family into a bare-field farmhouse where something has gone badly wrong with their small son.
Richard digs through the frozen ground, chasing the roots of a fabled oak the locals will not talk about. His wife Juliette looks for comfort somewhere far stranger, letting people and forces into the house that should have been left alone. The longer it goes, the harder it is to tell ordinary grief from an ancient evil that has slept under this land for centuries. And then there is the hare they find out on the dead acre.
Matt Smith and Morfydd Clark play it with almost no screaming and no jump scares: the dread here is slow and domestic, growing from the inside the way it does in Saint Maud or The Witch. It's adapted from Andrew Michael Hurley's novel and made for people who want quiet rural horror, not a chase. Stream Starve Acre (2024) online on iFILM.
