Synopsis
Watch online Pokémon: The First Movie (1998) on iFILM — the franchise's big-screen debut, an animated feature from director Kunihiko Yuyama, known in Japan as Mewtwo Strikes Back.
A lab breeds a brand-new kind of Pokémon: Mewtwo, a clone built from the DNA of the legendary Mew. The experiment works too well. Mewtwo wakes up, resents the humans who made it, and sets out to prove that the manufactured can crush the born. Disguised as a tournament invitation, it draws Ash, Pikachu and their friends to a storm-lashed island, then pits every Pokémon against a copy of itself. Rica Matsumoto voices Ash, with Ikue Otani back as Pikachu.
Underneath the trading-card spectacle sits a real question — what separates a living thing from a copy of it, and whether either one is worth less. The Pikachu scene near the end stuck with a whole generation who caught this as kids in the late nineties. Worth a watch if you grew up on the show or want to pass it down.
