Casanova's Return

Casanova's Return (2023) is Gabriele Salvatores' drama, available to watch online on iFILM. Acclaimed director Leo Bernardi has just wrapped what may be his last film and refuses to accept that his best years are behind him.

Leo is adapting Arthur Schnitzler's novella about an aging Casanova who, after years roaming Europe, wants nothing more than to come home to Venice. The charm is gone, the money too, and women no longer turn his way. A chance meeting with young Marcolina briefly rekindles his desire — then forces a bitter truth: he's an old man now. Toni Servillo plays both men, and the line between director and character keeps dissolving.

Salvatores builds the film as a double mirror, letting the fate of the fictional Casanova and Bernardi's own decline drift toward the same vanishing point. The result is quiet, ironic and occasionally merciless about age and vanity, carried by Servillo on facial expression alone. One for viewers who like unhurried European arthouse.
