Synopsis

I Am Not a Witch (2017) is a satirical drama you can watch online on iFILM, the debut feature of writer-director Rungano Nyoni, set in Zambia.

After a trivial incident in her village, nine-year-old Shula is branded a witch and sent to a roadside "witch camp," where the women are tethered by long white ribbons to enormous spools. Cut the ribbon and run, they're warned, and you'll turn into a goat. Silent and watchful, Shula becomes a local attraction, paraded around by a petty official who expects her to name thieves and summon rain on demand.

Nyoni's first feature is a dry, sharp-edged satire of superstition, patriarchy and exploitation, shot with documentary plainness and sudden bursts of surreal beauty. It premiered at Cannes and won her the BAFTA for Outstanding Debut. Newcomer Maggie Mulubwa holds the whole thing together with a quiet, devastating presence.
