Synopsis

September (1987) is a Woody Allen chamber drama you can watch online on iFILM. Mia Farrow, Dianne Wiest, Sam Waterston, and Denholm Elliott spend the end of summer at a Vermont country house. Six people, one house, and a web of misaligned affections: Howard loves Lane, Lane loves Peter, Peter is drawn to Stephanie, and Lane's mother Diane arrives with her own unresolved history to deposit.

Allen stripped the film of almost everything external — no music score, near-total interiors, no plot mechanics beyond who wants whom. What's left is conversation, silence, and the specific discomfort of people who care about each other being unable to give each other what they need. Denholm Elliott's Howard is quietly devastating; Dianne Wiest brings her usual ability to make a secondary role feel central.

The film sits closer to Chekhov than to Allen's comedies — not much happens, and that's precisely the point. It rewards patience and attention to what goes unsaid. Watch September (1987) online on iFILM.
