Synopsis
Golden Door (Nuovomondo, 2006) — an Italian drama by Emanuele Crialese, available to watch online on iFILM. The film took home the Silver Lion at the Venice Film Festival and was Italy's submission for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film.
Set in early twentieth-century Sicily, the story follows Salvatore — played by Vincenzo Amato — a widowed farmer who packs up his aged mother and two sons and books passage to America. On the ship he meets Lucy, played by Charlotte Gainsbourg: an Englishwoman who proposes marriage before they reach Ellis Island, for reasons she will not spell out. Salvatore accepts. Once the family arrives in New York, the dream stalls in a quarantine hall — medical inspections, literacy tests, and immigration officers who take thirty seconds to decide who enters and who gets sent back.
Crialese keeps the camera patient and the dialogue sparse, letting the details carry the weight: a dream sequence of giant vegetables, the sound of an unfamiliar language, the gap between what the family imagined and what the dock actually looks like. Stream Golden Door online on iFILM.
