Synopsis
The Old Gun (Le Vieux Fusil, 1975) is a French war drama you can watch online on iFILM, directed by Robert Enrico and starring Philippe Noiret and Romy Schneider. Summer 1944, occupied France. Surgeon Julien Dandieu sends his wife and daughter away from Montauban to an old family castle in the countryside — somewhere remote, off the main routes, somewhere safe. He was wrong.
An SS unit reaches the castle before he does. His wife is burned alive against its walls. His daughter is shot. When Julien arrives and understands what happened, he doesn't break down. He goes quiet. He knows the castle's layout — every passage, courtyard and cellar — better than the soldiers who occupy it now, and he has an old hunting rifle that's been hanging on the wall for years.
Noiret plays the whole thing at a low, controlled pitch, which is precisely what makes it so unsettling. The film took the top César Award and remains one of the most economical revenge thrillers in French cinema — the violence is blunt, the grief is real, and there is no speech about what justice means.
