Synopsis
The King and the Mockingbird (Le Roi et l'Oiseau, 1980) is Paul Grimault's French animated feature — watch it online on iFILM. The cross-eyed tyrant King Charles V+III=VIII+VIII=XVI rules the kingdom of Tachycardia with an iron fist. Only one creature dares mock him openly: the wisecracking Mockingbird, who has no fear and no filter.
When a painted Shepherdess and the Chimney Sweep she loves step out of their portrait frames and flee the palace, the king's sinister double unleashes a giant iron robot to drag them back. Their only ally is the bird — fast-talking, quick-witted, and completely fearless.
Grimault spent over two decades completing the film, and the script came from poet Jacques Prévert. The result is unlike anything Disney or anyone else was making at the time: darkly funny, politically sharp, and visually stunning. Stream The King and the Mockingbird online on iFILM.
