Synopsis
Free to Play (2014) is an esports documentary you can watch online on iFILM. Made by Valve, it follows three professional Dota 2 players chasing The International, a tournament with a one-million-dollar prize pool the industry had never seen before.
Three lives, three continents. Benedict "hyhy" Lim from Singapore competes against parents who see gaming as a waste of a future. Ukraine's Danil "Dendi" Ishutin carries the grief of losing his father and the hopes of an entire country. American Clinton "Fear" Loomis juggles practice with a day job just to stay afloat. The film is honest about what the dream costs: skeptical families, empty bank accounts, constant pressure, and one match that can rewrite everything.
Filmed in 2011, when a million-dollar pot still sounded absurd and esports was busy proving it counted as sport, it now plays like a time capsule of the moment competitive Dota went big-league. It's a natural fit for fans of the game and anyone curious how a hobby turns into a career. Stream Free to Play (2014) online on iFILM.
