Synopsis
For Whom the Bell Tolls (1943) is a wartime Hollywood epic you can watch online on iFILM, directed by Sam Wood and adapted from Ernest Hemingway's 1940 novel. Gary Cooper and Ingrid Bergman — the two biggest box-office names in Hollywood at the time — lead the cast in their first film together.
Set in Spain during the closing years of the Civil War, American dynamiter Robert Jordan arrives in the mountains with a single assignment from Republican command: blow up a bridge before the Nationalist offensive begins. He shelters with a small partisan band led by the volatile Pablo and his iron-willed wife Pilar, and falls for Maria, a young woman Pilar has been protecting. Three days. One objective. Nothing goes cleanly.
Nine Academy Award nominations followed. Pilar in particular landed Katina Paxinou the Best Supporting Actress prize — her performance was so dominant it overshadowed the leads in critical discussions for years. Paramount built the production as a season flagship; the Spanish mountain terrain was recreated across California's Sierra Nevada and locations in Idaho.
